Hypnogogia
This art work was inspired by the Hypnogogic state of being. Hypnogogia is an inner process of the mind that occurs when going to sleep. Often, this process incites lucid dreams, sounds, or feelings of weightlessness or falling. Artists have used this state to their advantage in the past. Citing that it has helped them with brainstorming solutions, or coming up with new creative material.
The hypnogogic state is common, and can be induced through relaxation of the mind and body. Having experienced it myself, I wanted to illustrate not only how it felt, but I wanted to represent the process itself.
In order to illustrate this state of mind to the best of my ability, I wanted to make full use of "3D" or the 0.5 space within a 2D graphic. Pairing this technique with reversing direction, I opted to emphasize the "dream sand" by making it 3D, reversing our 3D reality with our 2D imagination. Other important design decisions and applications include the paintings. Each painting represents an art movement, still life, impressionism, and abstraction. From left to right, the paintings explain the decent into and out of the hypnogogic state. The still life represents waking, impressionism hypnogogia, and abstractionism, dreaming.
While this is more of an informative illustration than an actual art piece, I believe I have found my style for art, combing 2D and 3D spaces in a meaningful and unique way.
